IA Day 7 — Finish Criterion B + Begin Ideation

Close remaining Criterion B gaps, then open the solution space with fast, distinct redesign directions.

80 minutesMini-lesson + work timeSL Design Project
Today’s question

Is your project definition strong enough to control your ideas?

The goal is to leave class with visible evidence—not just ideas in your head.

Is your project definition strong enough to control your ideas?01
15 minutes

Criterion B sets the rules. Criterion C explores possibilities.

Problem statement

What must improve?

Specifications

What counts as success?

Ideation

What different solutions could satisfy it?

If B is vague: C becomes preference-driven. If B is evidence-based, C can be evaluated objectively.
Do not begin detailed concepts until the project definition is usable.02
10-minute checkpoint

Can you answer “yes” to all six?

Task analysis link?

Key redesign opportunities came from real pain points.

Current situation + problem?

Context and failure are both clear.

Research summary?

The problem is justified with evidence.

Essential + desirable?

Priorities are explicit.

Detailed references?

Important requirements trace to research.

Testable?

Later ideas can actually be judged against them.

Fix the biggest weakness before moving on.03
Criterion C launch

Every seed must change something meaningful.

Seed A

Change architecture

Modular, collapsible, layered, one-piece, distributed, nested…

Seed B

Change interaction

Push, rotate, slide, squeeze, gesture, automatic response…

Seed C

Change arrangement

Vertical, radial, front-access, stacked, fold-away, symmetrical/asymmetrical…

The first goal is distinctness—not beauty.04
Independent work

Finish B, then generate—not polish.

0–15 min

Repair B

Resolve teacher feedback on problem statement/specification.

15–30 min

8 quick ideas

Use boxes; force a new approach every 2 ideas.

30–45 min

Annotate

Add feature → user need/spec links.

45–55 min

Choose 4–5

Circle directions worth developing next lesson.

Today is about opening the solution space.05
Use during work time

Be ready to answer these in 60 seconds.

1. What is the most important user problem?
Point to your evidence—not your opinion.
2. Which three specs are truly essential?
Explain why the project fails without them.
3. How are your idea seeds genuinely different?
Name the architecture, interaction or arrangement change.
Fast explanation exposes vague thinking.06
Evidence checkpoint

Today’s visible evidence

Criterion B problem statement + specification ready for teacher review.
At least eight quick ideation seeds.
At least four ideas that are meaningfully different.
Annotations linking key features to user needs / specifications.
Do not spend the whole period making one drawing beautiful.07
Exit ticket

Before you leave…

1. Show the idea that is most structurally different from your first concept.
2. Name one specification that eliminated or weakened an idea.
3. Write one thing you need to model or test before choosing your best three.
Next lesson

Low- vs High-Fidelity Prototyping

Keep the evidence chain moving: user → research → decision → test.
